“Pelvic‑floor physio is only for women after childbirth.”
Reality: Pelvic health physio is NOT just for women after child birth. We should be educating the nation that we all have a pelvic floor and that we should be looking after the, from a young age and right through the different life stages. From puberty, to post menopause.
“It’s only about Kegels.”
Reality: Kegels are just one tool. Some individuals need relaxation rather than strengthening—especially if their pelvic‑floor muscles are over‑tight. My favourite saying is 'pelvic health is a puzzle' we look at the whole person to make sure we tailor exercises accordingly. This is part of the NHS NICE guidelines that we supervise and indicualise pelvic floor muscle training.
“It’s only for incontinence.”
Reality: Pelvic‑floor physio addresses a wide spectrum of issues: pelvic pain, prolapse, bowel dysfunction, painful intercourse, core instability, post‑surgery recovery and even sports‑related dysfunctions.
“Leakage or pain is just normal.”
Reality: While common—especially post‑pregnancy or with age—urinary leakage or pain is not something you have to live with. These symptoms are often treatable and I would strongly urge you to see a medical professional such as a GP or Pelvic Health Physiotherapist.
“It’s embarrassing or too invasive.”
Reality: Pelvic Health Physio's aim to create a safe, respectful environment. Internal assessments are optional and always explained beforehand and of course only compelted with full consent gained. While an internal exmaination is helpful it is not always necessary but the options will be discussed with you at your appointment. Sometimes patients find it helpful to speak to thier physio before the appointment so they can start to feel more comfortable prior to coming in.
6.“I need a doctor’s referral.”
Reality: In many places, you can access physiotherapy—including pelvic health physio without a GP referral. There are NHS and Private options around but do check in your local area. Pelvic Health physios is becoming better known and we have a great network if you don't fall within our area. We can often recommend someone.
✅ Final Thoughts
Pelvic‑health physiotherapy is a holistic, individualised approach—considering posture, breathing, a range of pelvic floor and surrounding muscles, mental stress, and lifestyle factors—not just isolated muscles. It’s about empowering clients to feel confident and supported as well as achieving goals.
